Mariner Compass & Friend….Quilting Block

I’d like to give you the number of squares to make/cut for this variation on the Mariners Compass.   It is really striking in appearance and goes together fast.  This finished block will measure 14.5 x 14.5 inches with the 1/4 inch seam.  I found the larger corner squares (4.25x 4.25) )and middle  fill in squares (4.25 x 4.25) to be a bit large.  I first sewed the strips together than trimmed off those large 4.25 x 4.25 squares.    Fat quarter size fabric will make 2 of these blocks.   Pick  3  fabrics and a back ground…  A is a red(dark) , D is a pattern cream (lite).  B is gold with tiny chickens (med).    And the background is bleached muslim..(fabric for all my Mariner & Variation blocks)

   Cut all squares 2.5×2.5    A-16   B- 16  D- 28

A & D make 12  (dark & Lite)

B & D  make 12 (Med & lite)

A & B  Your center and it’s a pin wheel.. make 4   (dark & med)

D   cut 4 at 2.5 x 2.5

Cut 8 squares 4.25 x 4.25 for each block  from back ground (muslim lite)  fabric choice.   Or from D fabric choice.. (lite)

ex 1ex 2ex 3 pinwheelex 4 fillers

I made  2 of these blocks  and really need to make more for a future quilt…

Let’s NOT forget the original block that pairs nicely with the variation..  A HST  Mariners Compass.. measures 14.5X14.5
